Movable Type

I've decided to change my blog software from Wordpress to Movable Type.  The main reason for this is that I was finding my blog to be running rather slowly.  Wordpress regenerates every page view from the database, whereas Movable Type generates static HTML pages when anything is published (be it a post, comment, etc) which should make things a lot snappier.

I've imported everything from my old blog (a surprisingly easy process), and put in a redirect on the server to the new page.  This will mean however that people will need to change their RSS/Atom feeds to point at the new system.  It also means my facebook profile has reimported all the posts, but that's not really a major problem.

OK, a few things:

  1. Apache is a bloated dog. First point of call for me was to replace it. I use Litespeed at the mo, and it makes Apache look like IIS! Apache comes with way too much crap that you don't need. BTW, Litespeed is what powers wordpress.com.
  2. You're lucky that your MT install supports openID out of the box otherwise I'd never have posted another comment on this blog. What's with the closed garden mate!? Install a spam catcher and let the world comment without having to sign in/sign up. That'll keep people away.
  3. There are a few plugins that you can use with WP that stop things from being regenerated, such as WP-cache, digg defender, etc. WP-cache essentially makes things static in the same way that MT does.
  4. What's this about a wp-hacker group?

Make sure you blog your thoughts on MT vs WP when you've had the chanct to use it a bit mate. I'm keen to hear how you feel about the comment management, ease of use, themes, plugins, etc.

Cheers!

PS. The built-in openID support doesn't correctly read my name from my openID provider (unlike the OpenID plugin for WP ;)). So it looks like a URL instead, not good!
PPS. There's a bug in the javascript when you press "preview" before posting a comment.

  1. I'm stuck with Apache unless I change hosting companies.
  2. All I've got turned off is anonymous comments. The spam service has already caught a load of comments so bots are able to register. Anyone should be able to register as a commenter.
  3. wp-cache and wp-supercache keep breaking every time wp is upgraded. MT has static html caching out of the box.
  4. wp-hackers is the dev board for wordpress. http://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-hackers

I sure will write a comparison post once I've used it a bit. I'm not sure what's up with the OpenID stuff, I'll dig around the settings and see what I can do.

The preview thing seems to work here in IE7 - got to eat our own dogfood in work. I'll check it out in a few other browsers at home later.

I've changed the settings so I don't have to approve every individual comment. Should make things a little easier for you.

OJ - looking at the users page in my admin panel, it shows you having both a name and a url of "rant.blackapache.net" and doesn't give me any way to edit it.

Hey dude.

I still hate #2, and you're still lucky I have an OpenID otherwise I wouldn't sign up just to comment :)

I had no issues with WP-cache breaking at all, and I upgraded wordpress constantly. Are you sure it wasn't some other plugin that was breaking?

As far as the OpenID stuff is concerned, I don't think that'll be something that'll appear as an option for you. Most OpenID providers allow you to specify a persona which contains the name to be shown when the comment is made.

Do you have an OpenID? If so, post a comment on my blog using your openID and you'll see what i'm getting at. If not, have a look at my comments, they're all openID enabled, but actually have my name as requested.

Some sites that i post comments on that use OpenID get my full name out, but that's still better than the url :)

PS. turn on javascript debugging in IE7 and you'll see it fire the error when you hit preview!

OK, I see what you mean about the commenting registration process, I've enabled anonymous comments (hopefully the spam filter is good enough!).

I still don't see a script error, even with the script debugger turned on.

Ah well, never mind. Good work on the anon comments. I do think it's a good thing to do. Nothing worse than having to register just to say "Yup, i agree" :P

Yup, I agree! ;-)

Is there a RSS feed for comments still? I can't see it, but maybe I'm being blind.

Hmm. There's a feed available in my admin panel, but I can't see it from the blog. I'll hunt around to see if I can enable it for ya!
